The Problem It Solves

Why fiber, and not a camera at the tip? A fiberscope carries the image through an ordered bundle of glass fibers: each fiber transmits a single point of the image from the tip to the eyepiece, and the full image is reconstructed at the other end by all the points together. A second fiber bundle transmits light in the opposite direction, illuminating the space. Because there is no electronics at the tip, the probe can be made extremely slim and highly flexible — which is why a 4 mm diameter is possible.

That slim profile is the whole point. The difference between 4 mm and 6 mm sounds minor, but it determines whether the probe can enter through an existing opening — a grease fitting, a sensor port, a spark plug hole, a narrow gap in a structure — or if components must be disassembled to gain access. The value of an inspection lies in avoiding disassembly, and that value is lost the moment the probe cannot fit.

The fact that the probe is waterproof and oil-resistant directly corresponds to where it is used. What needs inspecting is rarely clean: gearboxes contain oil, engines have soot and fuel residues, and underfloor heating pipes hold water. A probe that cannot withstand the surrounding medium is, in practice, a single-use tool.

And back to the accessories, because this detail matters more than it might seem. A mirror provides a side view — angling the line of sight so you can inspect the adjacent wall rather than straight ahead, which is often where the damage is located. A magnet turns the instrument into a retrieval tool for a dropped screw or a broken tap. Both sit at the very tip of an instrument inserted into confined spaces, which is the exact location where a loose accessory can never be risked. A threaded mount is a simple engineering detail that eliminates that entire hazard.

For an instrument intended to live in a workshop trolley for a decade and be handled by various technicians, this is an advantage that may not stand out on a spec sheet, but shows clearly in its service life.
